A CREATING WITH NATURE RETREAT
LED BY EMILY JEFFORDS & TANYA VAL
You deserve to lose yourself in creativity (and thereby, find yourself again.)
4 days of creativity, rest, and deep inspiration in the Sonoran Desert.
PLEIN AIR PAINTING. FORAGED PIGMENT. NATURAL INKS. BOTANICAL DYE. CREATIVE EXPLORATION. COMMUNITY. DESERT EVENINGS. INTENTIONAL MEALS. LAUGHTER OVER CANDLELIGHT. THOUGHTFULLY DESIGNED VENUE. SPACE TO REST.
The desert has shaped our creative lives.
Each time we return, we notice something new in the light, the plants, the stillness. It changes how we see and how we create.
We can’t wait to experience it all with you!

The heart of this retreat is time spent creating outdoors and with nature.
Using materials gathered from the landscape alongside supplies from Emily and Tanya's personal studio collections, we'll create in settings that will have you finding creativity everywhere you look.
Our retreat venue offers many beautiful settings and shaded areas, perfect for your studio al fresco! -
The natural world is endlessly beautiful, and one of the most gratifying ways we celebrate it is through photos and videos that share our unique points of view. To capture a scene in a photograph is, in a way, paying respect to the beauty you are witnessing.
In this workshop, we'll
guide you through intuitive photography
Discuss video techniques and methods to make this dimensional art form more accessible and exciting
How to use objects like plans, glass, shadows, and movement to create artful photographs and videos
Help you develop your own point of view behind the camera
Share how both Emily and Tanya approach capturing meaningful moments of inspiration

This workshop feels like you just walked into a delicious candy store: a whole new world of color is suddenly at your fingertips as plants become intensely beautiful dyes, inks, and stains.
Learn to identify and gather pigment-rich organic materials, then explore the vibrant colors hidden in their blooms, seeds, leaves, and roots, and the chemical reactions that bring even more magic to your creativity.
We'll spend hours uncovering the beauty of natural color, creating art deeply rooted in the essence of the desert. -
Tanya guides you through the art of creating your own silk scarf using flowers and plants as your palette.
We’ll thoughtfully arrange botanicals and organic dyes on silk and then watch as the magic takes over as they steam. Chemical reactions take over, colors bleed and bloom in ways nobody can fully predict, and what's revealed when you unroll the silk feels very much like abstract artwork. The whole thing feels like collaborating with nature and losing control in the best possible way. -
This workshop will forever change the way you look at rocks, minerals, and the landscape.
We'll gather natural minerals and transform them into oil paint, watercolor, acrylic, and stains for use on canvas, paper, and beyond. Using only natural, non-toxic materials, we'll create works that are as sustainable as they are beautiful. There is real mystery in natural pigments and the chemistry at play on your canvas. It feels like pure magic because it kind of is.
-
Experience the full process of making natural oil paint completely from rock to finished artwork.
We begin by collecting raw minerals and earth pigments from the landscape (and from Emily’s studio), then grind them into fine powder and bind them with cold-pressed linseed oil.
With your handmade paints ready, you'll work on canvas, discovering the extraordinary depth and texture that sets earth pigment oils apart. -
This workshop takes you through the full arc of a painting and really allows your creativity to expand. There are no rules in this workshop. By now, you’ve tried everything and feel familiar with all mediums, and it’s time to play.
We'll guide you through creating abstract paintings on paper and/or canvas that capture the essence of the landscape and the emotion you're tapping into. -
Another visually stunning workshop! We'll style a lush floral arrangement together under Tanya’s direction, playing with composition, color, and light (think Dutch Masters - but desert vibes) before translating it into a painting in whatever medium speaks to you.
Watercolor, oil, acrylic, ink… a combination of mediums, the choice is yours. This offers you a moment look closely and find the extraordinary in what's right in front of you. -
Before abstraction had a name, Hilma af Klint was already living inside it. A painter, botanist, and deeply spiritual thinker, she created some of the most breathtaking botanical and abstract art.
Throughout this retreat, we’ll reference and draw inspiration from Hilma’s work, particularly her smaller-scale botanical studies, her ethos, and her revolutionary ideas. Prepare to be genuinely moved by this woman and her work. -
The heart of this Retreat is the time we spend creating, exploring, and expanding outdoors. And, just as the year moves through seasons, so do our inner worlds and our creative lives.
Throughout the retreat, we'll discuss how to nourish your creative practice through all of life's shifts and stay connected to that renewable, magical part of yourself. These are practices that have genuinely transformed our own lives, allowed us to access lasting inspiration, and we cannot wait to share them with you.
"Every detail, every need, was perfectly attended to, leaving me feeling truly nourished and cared for. This experience was not just unforgettable, but life-changing."
— KRISTI
Daily Rhythm
Structured enough to go deep.
Spacious enough to breathe.Morning — Intention + Exploration
We start slowly and gently. Coffee in hand, desert light coming in, no rush. Our mornings open with intention setting before moving into guided, hands-on, delicious creativity and learning. You might explore raw desert pigment, natural dye processes, or earth-based techniques you've never tried.
November light is softer and directional. The palette feels restrained and nuanced.
Midday — Creative Exploration Even with all the inspiration flowing, we gladly pause and gather for lunch. Our retreat chef, Mike (you’re going to love him), is dedicated to serving us the most delicious meals that also feel like works of art. Then we head back to our outdoor studios and into our creative exploration again, plein air painting, silk bundling, or styling and creating in our shady spots. Things begin to really flow now. The creativity and refreshment settle in, and you can feel the magic flowing. There's room to work independently and go deeper with guidance close by whenever you want it.
Space in Between
This part, the pause, breathe, rest part, matters more than you'd think. We value rest just as much as activity. This is your moment to escape. We know how rare this is, so cherish it! Go for an afternoon swim in the canyon pool, spend some time in the sauna, take a cold plunge, or take a walk beneath the open sky on the expansive trails.
Creative clarity often arrives in these pauses.
Evening — Gathering + Reflection
As the sun lowers, the landscape glows pink and cream. We gather for dinner, and conversations stretch into the night as we enjoy yet another decadent meal and rich conversation, laughter, and people who often become friends.
We close each day feeling focused and restored. Ready to create again tomorrow.
Meet us at
The Posada
A desert oasis bordering Saguaro National Park.
A desert oasis bordering Saguaro National Park.
Posada Inn, by the Joshua Tree House, is situated within 38 acres of open Sonoran landscape, towering saguaro, native plants, and long desert light. Sacred and quiet, yet easily accessible from Tucson. It is the kind of place where you exhale the moment you arrive. Even the drive to the venue will take your breath away!
We return here year after year because the land shapes the work, and few places feel as generous in their inspiration and gentle nurturing as this perfect inn set in this stunning landscape.
There are extensive trails winding through the grounds for you to explore, or you can stay close and cozy in the retreat inn, which is glorious and impeccably designed, with spaces for conversation, reflection, and creative focus — shaded tables, quiet corners for sketching, and gathering spaces that feel intentional.
The retreat venue also has a spa courtyard with a sauna, cold plunge, canyon-style pool, and hot tub, which offers a place to relax between sessions.
There are 8 rooms and suites available for retreat guests, and they’re stunning.
The landscape isn't just a backdrop; it becomes part of the process.

Let us nourish you
All food and drinks are included in the retreat (but, this is coming from foodies, so our version of this is next level).
Good food is something we take very seriously and genuinely love. Chef Mike has traveled with us for years, creating meals that have left everyone amazed and more than satisfied. He knows exactly the kind of nourishment that keeps creative energy alive.
As with everything at a Creating With Nature Retreat, the meals you enjoy will be created with local, seasonal ingredients inspired by the desert landscape — think bright citrus salads, roasted vegetables with warmth and depth, spices from Mike’s local spice shop, fresh tortillas, and sauces that taste as if they have been perfected over decades.
Drinks are just as thoughtful, from thoughtful wine pairings to NA afternoon refreshments to cocktails with desert botanicals woven in.
Evenings at the table are some of our favorite moments of the whole retreat. Unhurried, full of laughter and the kind of conversation that surprises you, these dinners usually last until only candlelight and starlight remain.
All that to say, we cannot wait to feed you well.

-
Not at all! This retreat and workshops are designed for anyone with a curious heart and a willingness to try something new. Beginners are so welcome here, and honestly? They often leave the most transformed.
-
We provide all art supplies including raw pigments, beautiful paper, canvas, brushes, and more. We'll send a full packing list after booking, but in general: comfortable layers, clothes you don't mind getting colorful, a hat, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle. We'll take care of everything else.
You're welcome to bring extra art supplies, a journal, a good book, or whatever helps you feel most at home with yourself and your creativity.
If you'd love to invest in tools you'll return to long after the retreat, a mortar and pestle and a personal easel are wonderful additions to any creative practice. Neither is required and everything you need will be provided, but if you've been looking for a reason to treat yourself, this is a beautiful one.
-
The Creating With Nature Retreats are always small, intimate groups. This is intentional. We deeply value real connections, personalized attention, and the kind of easy warmth that only happens when a group is small enough to truly know each other.
-
The venue is about 40 minutes outside of Tucson, and the drive is genuinely beautiful. We recommend pausing along the way to take in the landscape as it shifts at every turn.
We'll send you a curated playlist for the road. We highly recommend arriving a day or two early to settle in and explore at your own pace — we'll share a field guide with our favorite local spots for eating, wandering, and soaking it all in. -
Tucson has many lovely options. We love the Leo Kent Hotel. The Ritz-Carlton Dove Mountain and Canyon Ranch Tucson would be lovely options for a more luxurious, wellness-focused stay.
Airbnb is a great option, too, if you'd prefer something that feels more like home. We're happy to help connect guests who'd like to share accommodations or coordinate travel together. -
Warm, dry desert air, sunny days, and cool, bright starry nights. Honestly, you can expect some of the most beautiful weather you'll ever experience.
Pack light layers, a hat, a sweater for the cool evenings, and sunscreen, and you'll be perfectly comfortable all weekend. -
Not only is it okay, it is one of the most courageous and beautiful gifts you can give yourself.
So many of our guests arrive solo, and time and again it becomes the thing they're most grateful for. You arrive as yourself, free to fully show up without distraction. That openness is exactly what makes the connections here so meaningful.
We put tremendous care into creating a space that feels warm and welcoming from the very first moment. The intimacy of our small group means connection happens naturally and quickly. By the end of the first evening, we think you'll wonder why you ever hesitated.
We've got you, truly.
